East City Art Critical Review Collaborative

In addition to the renowned institutions on the National Mall, Washington DC and its surrounding metropolitan area host world-class art exhibitions. Unfortunately, the major newspapers in the region do not provide adequate coverage of visual arts, leading to a lack of public engagement and discourse on contemporary local art. As of September 2024, the Washington Post suspended its weekly "In the Galleries" column written by Mark Jenkins. It has not been replaced To address this gap, regional artists and curators have sought a platform to facilitate discussions about their work and practices with local audiences. East City Art has responded to this need by offering comprehensive coverage and critical writing on regional visual arts. Coverage We take pride in being the sole publication that offers listings of gallery openings, artist talks, and other special events related to the local art scene. Our commitment extends to regularly publishing news briefs that keep our readers informed about the latest developments impacting the DC art community. Additionally, we collaborate closely with local arts organizations to ensure thorough coverage and effective promotion of their initiatives. Critical Writing Recognizing the importance of critical analysis, East City Art has established a writers' collaborative program led by a subject matter expert, Dr. Claudia Rousseau, Professor Emeritus at Montgomery College, Takoma Park. Dr. Rousseau serves as our editor-at-large and meticulously reviews and evaluates the critiques produced by our writers' collaborative before they are published on East City Art's website. The collaborative includes Katherine Markowski, Ph.D., an establish art history scholar and Marylou Bono, a seasoned arts journalist These critical reviews, authored by the collaborative of artists, are made available to the public on a weekly basis at www.eastcityart.com. The collaborative will meet monthly to review, discuss and fine tune its writing. We are seeking funds to cover the expense of this project. These "graduate style" seminars are led by Claudia Rousseau, a venerated pedagogue with four decades of teaching experience.
