Grantee work shaping communities in 2026!

Where Art Becomes Action

Happy New Year friends of Tour de Force!

We hope you all entered 2026 with renewed energy and zest for creating a good life – many of the grantees and artists we’ve come to know certainly have! From exciting exhibitions to articles detailing their good works, here's a sample of current grantee-related events in and around the DMV:

Julio Valdez’s Mapping the Layers documentary follows his artistic practice and growth, exploring the symbolic, visual, and material layers that he creates with. Julio’s exhibition, Mapping the Layers, was on display at the Art Museum of the Americas in 2022.

Shaymar Higgs, founder of The SPACE Free Art for All has worked with his team to consistently provide free art workshops, classes, and community events, as well as donation-based drives. The impact of The SPACE has not gone unnoticed, as they were recently featured in Greenbelt News Review, Voyage Baltimore, and The Washington Post.

Selena Jackson, also known as Noir, has a solo exhibition at Rhizome DC, entitled Faces of America. Noir’s collection of portraits highlight layered and varied identities, bringing diversity to the forefront in a beautiful study of humanity. The exhibition is on view until February 1st.

Jessica Valoris is a contributing artist to the Freedom & Resistance exhibition, inspired by The 1619 Project. This exhibition is on view at MLK Library until March 15th and is presented in three parts which explore:

  • The history and context presented in The 1619 Project.

  • The history and context presented in The 1619 Project, as it relates to D.C.

  • Youth responses to freedom and resistance, submitted as a work of art.

And a special shoutout to our grantees with ongoing programs, including ArtEasy Studio, Partners for Historical Justice, East City Art, MICA, and The Justice Arts Coalition.
