Soundwave Art Park (2020)
Artist
David Prete
Location
Material
Steel (alloy), aluminum (metal), paint, concrete, plastic (organic material)
Description from website
The permanent sculptural installation "The Soundwave Art Park" is based on four simple but artistically interesting elements: a sculptural landmark that works also as a visual screen, a sculptural seating system in metal following the same design, a playable interactive area, and an open and natural space. All these four elements are connected, creating a fluid space and also representing the four elements: Fire, Air, Water, Earth.
The sculptural landmark in painted steel with a gradient from blue to yellow represents the soundwave from selected music and it becomes a colorful seating system. After that, the artwork becomes a painted dry river that connects the sculpture to the playground where kids can play different games.

Prompts for Closer Looking
Located about three blocks from the Anacostia River (from which it is separated by I- 295, the Anacostia Freeway), how does this art space capture the beauty and energy of the Anacostia riverscape, including the diverse sounds of the natural and cultural worlds found on and near the river?
How is this version of the Anacostia River like and unlike other depictions of the river we have explored in Re-envisioning Blackness?
How does this work relate the energies of the air and the energies of the moving human body? Consider the relationship between the multicolored elements that are free -tanding, which seem to evoke soundwaves through the air, and the blocks of color on the ground, which invite us to play and hop from square to square. How do music and sound invite us to dance, play, celebrate, and experience joy?
